About this video
As part of Tonic DNA’s AI Lab initiative, artist and filmmaker Malcolm Sutherland announces 10th Life, a point-and-click game concept created through a fusion of AI-generated art and traditional animation techniques. Inspired by early 90s DOS first-person games, 10th Life offers a visually unique, hallucinogenic journey that merges cutting-edge technology with Sutherland’s signature style. The game trailer follows KatKat, a cat who has died nine times and is granted one final life by the cat god to resolve his unfinished business. As KatKat explores the ghostly realm, players will uncover the hidden meaning behind each of his past lives. Every mystery solved rewards KatKat with a new body part, slowly rebuilding himself piece by piece. The environments are generated from a database of Malcolm’s original artworks, developed during his film project Dragon Hunter. By training a custom LoRA model, Sutherland was able to create new backgrounds in his signature style, using 3D models and photographs as a foundation. "The first time AI created a piece of art that was 90% the way I would have drawn. It was a very strange experience," he reflects. Character animation for the 10th Life game trailer also involves AI tools with Malcolm’s personal artistry. He painted the first frame of each sequence, then used EBSynth to generate a first pass of animation, followed by meticulous rounds of manual cleanup, retiming, and effects work to achieve the game’s surreal, fluid aesthetic. Tonic DNA is not currently developing 10th Life beyond this proof-of-concept trailer. But if there was ever an opportunity to work with a game developer on this, we would love to return to KatKat’s world. 10th Life stands as both a nostalgic homage to classic games and a bold experiment in the creative potential of AI-driven art.
